Back to Basics

Before I post about breakfast, I would like to respond to Maggie's comment from yesterday about the definition of processed foods. What an oversight! I didn't even really define my mission. Here's a definition from about.com: http://nutrition.about.com/od/askyournutritionist/f/processedfoods.htm

There is lots of opinion-based information out there about processed vs unprocessed foods, but not so much in the way of cold hard facts. The general idea is that processing takes food further away from its natural state. Some definitions I read said that meant as little as peeling a potato (because then it's not "whole" anymore...), but to most people it means corn syrup, bleached flour, fake sugars, and preservatives. The way I'm doing this is somewhere in between those 2 ends of the spectrum. Definitely none of that junk food I just described, but I am happy to peel potatoes. I think that's where the line is blurred: processing food vs cooking it. I think that's why there's so much overlap with a raw diet, but as I said before, that's just silly. Cooking makes foods digestible and delicious. Raw is not for me!

  1. Interesting article. Definitely with you on raw perspective. It works for some people but I dont think I could do it either!
